A springtime daily return drive on the highway and byways between Beechworth and Wangaratta yields a fine prospect: late summer fruit from a brigade of roadside volunteers.

In the long eucalypt woodland bordering these roads, late in winter, splashes of pale and darker pink and white appear when the wild plums flower. These escapees from farm orchards or bird-passed pits make my day. The main image here of a beauty near Pennyweight Winery on Beechworth’s outskirts, as are the next two. The last is of another near Three Mile.

Forage ahead. Keep an eye out.
